My New Pet , written and illustrated by Melanie Bremner is a delightful story that any child will enjoy reading, and all parents can appreciate. Written in a simple rhyme scheme pattern, this story is great for beginning readers, as well as a great read aloud. My eight year old and I both really enjoyed the original, colorful illustrations. As a teacher, I could think of a million things to discuss with students, like poetry for example. While reading, My New Pet , with my son, I counted several different themes, or lessons, I could easily discuss with my son or students while reading, or afterwards in one of life’s many teachable moments. The story line was well written, and as the mother of a young son, I really enjoyed the realism of the story.
